Curve MAKE ing
A workshop exploring different parameters of historical pattern production techniques for curved surfaces
18 May 2019
TAŞKIŞLA
Organizing Committee: Mine Özkar, Begüm Hamzaoğlu, Sibel Yasemin Özgan
The workshop will focus on the generative process of making and its relation to design in historical pattern production techniques. Participants will be introduced to the carving methods using a three-axis CNC milling machine and tessellation methods on curved surfaces using Grasshopper and laser-cutting machine. The design task is to generate various geometric patterns on differently curved surfaces by altering the algorithms using the historical making knowledge and exploring through different carving toolpath and tessellation ideas.
Our main motivation is to discover and experience new ways of interacting with digital fabrication tools to trigger different movements and layers on surfaces to transform and generate new designs. The workshop aims at relating shape transformations to making rules in order to analyze and discuss how do we visually compute making and how rules may lead to ambiguity and emergence.
Experiments will be realized through small-scale 1:1 fabrication on wood/cardboard panels with a do-it-yourself approach.
SCHEDULE
The workshop will last for one day. The session is formed of four main phases:
INTRODUCTION | 10:00 – 11:00
The session will start with a brief introduction and presentation on the key theoretical and technical concepts of pattern making in Medieval Islamic Architecture in Anatolia.
Computing the Making of Carved Stone Patterns
Begüm Hamzaoğlu
Effects of Craft Techniques on the Application of Tile Mosaic Patterns on Curved Surfaces
Sibel Yasemin Özgan
TUTORIAL | 11:15 – 12:30
Carving techniques using CNC milling machine and RhinoCAM
Begüm Hamzaoğlu
Mosaic tiling techniques using Grasshopper and Laser-Cutter
Sibel Yasemin Özgan
DESIGN | 13:30 – 16:30
Participants will work on their design proposals.
We will provide a collection of sample 2D pattern designs.
Participants working with the carving techniques will generate a CNC milling toolpath in RhinoCAM based on their desired design outcome. During the design session, participants will be making prototypes on foam models using the CNC milling machine.
Participants working with the tiling techniques will manipulate the tessellations and layers in Grasshopper based on their desired 3D forms and explore the relations between the production techniques and the surface curvature. During the design session, participants will be making prototypes using a cutter.
At the end of the session, digital files for CNC milling and laser cutting productions will be prepared.
PRODUCTION
The fabrication of the final designs will start at the end of the day.
APPLICATION
Applications are now open to to all design students in Bachelor (3rd/4th year) and Master programs (1st/2nd)!
A limited number of places are available. Applications will be accepted until 18:00 on 16 May 2019. Please send an email to hamzaoglu@itu.edu.tr in order to apply and present 3 sentences on your interest in the workshop, your department/program, year and digital modeling/fabrication tools that you are familiar with.
